SUMMARY:Homelessness Resource Fair
DESCRIPTION:Homelessness is a complex issue that many Angelenos want to see resolved quickly. While the City of Los Angeles\, the County of Los Angeles and other governmental agencies are working on mid and long term solutions (i.e. Bridge Home\, Permanent Supportive Housing\, etc.)\, community members\, advocacy coalitions\, Neighborhood Councils\, and non-profit organizations are working everyday to help our fellow Angelenos who live on our streets. \nThe City of Los Angeles\, Department of Neighborhood Empowerment\, in collaboration with County\, State and Federal governmental agencies\, is organizing the 1st Homelessness Resource Fair (HRF). \nRSVP HERE: http://tiny.cc/LAHRF \nThis event aims to connect people and organizations with those who want to take action but don’t know where to start. Governmental Agencies will present an update on their projects and policies\, and advocates and organizations will present their work and explain how to replicate in other areas. The Homelessness Resource Fair will also organize a hygiene product drive.

SUMMARY:Fall Into Literacy
DESCRIPTION:United Way of Greater Los Angeles and Valero Wilmington Refinery are joining together to celebrate our community and improve literacy at the 8th Annual Fall Into Literacy on Saturday\, October 13. The free festival will take place at The Banning Museum in Wilmington\, CA. All families are invited to take part in educational activities and gain information about social services. \nThis year’s recurring theme\, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)\, honors the region’s rich cultural history while promoting literacy\, education and access to basic-need resources. The event features live entertainment—including a special performance by Selenamos and an appearance by Elephant & Piggie—as well as book signings\, storytelling\, meet and greets with authors\, book giveaways\, and fun activities for the whole family. \nThis year’s event is sponsored by City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks\, City National Bank\, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Office of Joe Buscaino. In addition to the array of family activities\, the festival features a resource fair where there will be opportunities to purchase books and connect with local organizations about services in education\, health care\, and financial stability. \nWilmington\, an historically underserved community\, is nestled between Torrance and Long Beach in L.A. County’s South Bay. Thanks to Valero’s philanthropic support\, United Way of Greater Los Angeles has been able to make a collective impact in the community by creating a fun and inviting space for grade-level reading and by giving away more than 7\,000 books. \nJoin us this year at Fall Into Literacy on October 13!
